Everything You Need to Know About Butt Plugs

From furry tails to sparkling jewels, butt plugs are as diverse as kinksters.

Below we’ve compiled all the things you need to know when it comes to this popular toy.

What are butt plugs made of?

Butt plugs can be made from a number of materials, such as glass, metal, silicone, or PVC and rubber.

The porous nature of PVC and rubber (along with plugs made of TPR, which is a synthetic rubber), means they can never be fully sterilized.

Stains and smells hang around on low-cost butt plug options, which means you’ll toss them after a short amount of time if you’re using them frequently.

Meanwhile, silicone, glass, and metal are able to be fully sterilized, though they do carry a higher price tag. Keep in mind that silicone lubricant may not be very effective on a silicone butt plug.

As a general rule, the softer the material is, the easier the butt plug is to insert.

If you’re unsure about whether or not a butt plug would feel pleasurable to you, start out with a Rubber or PVC one. If you end up really enjoying it, consider purchasing one that can be sterilized and is more long-lasting.

What size butt plug should I use?

If you’re new to anal play, a good rule of thumb is to start out small.

Many websites offer what are called “trainer sets” which typically consist of three plugs that gradually increase in size. The range of butt plug sizes is very wide (pardon the pun), so if the one you purchase feels too small (or too big), rest assured that there is a size for everyone.

How do I use a butt plug training set?

Start with the small butt plug in the set and slowly make your way to the largest.

In terms of how long you should wait before increasing the size, that decision is up to you.

We’d love to give you a prescription on butt plug training, but you know your body more than anyone else.

Patience is key when it comes to anal play - your body has to learn a new sensation.

Most manufacturers recommend not wearing a butt plug for longer than 2-3 hours, and it’s not advisable to sleep with one in. We’re aware that many kinksters wear plugs for significantly longer than this, but we’re staying on the conservative side. If you’re new, you should, too.

Wearing a butt plug takes some getting used to, so there’s no reason to feel bad if you can only comfortably have it in for a few minutes at a time.

And remember; kink is not a competition. If you discover that you’re not into plugs, or that you can only handle a comparatively small one, that’s no indicator of your kinkiness.

Can a butt plug get lost?

What do we mean by ‘lost’? Well… Let’s say you and your partner are playing with a new butt plug. You begin doing some other activities and suddenly you hear your partner say the words no one with a butt plug inside them wants to hear: “Uh-oh.”

Some of the more affordable butt plugs may seem attractive (and for the most part, they’re perfectly fine to use), but if the base on the plug is smaller than the widest part of the plug, you run the risk of losing the butt plug in your anal canal. Even a wide base isn’t a guaranteed safety measure, but it is safer.

You might be surprised at how often this happens, especially if vaginal penetration is involved.

Ensure that you purchase a butt plug where the top is the widest part. Often, plugs are flared or the decorated base is widest. This is a small detail, but a vital one to ensure you don’t end up in the emergency room.

Butt plugs are a fun toy and one that is relatively safe, assuming you use lubricant, go slow, and know the importance of a wide base. The features you can choose from are practically limitless. Enjoy your exploration - part of the fun of these little toys is figuring out the features you love the best.
