Mitigating Risk in Urethral Play
Urethral Play is a scene involving the urinary passage; often with the insertion of sounding rods.
Common Risks of Urethral Play:
Infection
Urethral injury
Retrograde ejaculation
Key Requirements of Urethral Play:
Gloves
Sterile sounds / plugs
Alcohol swabs
Lubricant
Things to Consider During Urethral Play
Sterilise anything involved in urethral play - including yourself
This means everything: Sterilise the sounds / rods beforehand, then wipe them down with alcohol swabs prior to use. Ensure the penis is clean, and that everybody washes their hands with antibacterial soap and hot water. To be extra careful, use surgical gloves as an additional precaution - which can be handy for a truly medical touch!
Go slowly when exploring urethral sounding
A piece of advice that’s central to exploring kink in general is to go slowly. That’s even more critical in an activity like sounding, as rushing the activity can cause undue pain, as well as significant damage. Take the time to relax into the activity.
Use lubricant, liberally
If there’s only one piece of advice you take with you about sounding, let it be lubricant. Be liberal with it. It’s designed for a reason, and the difference it’ll make to the bottom’s experience is make or break. There are places where friction and a bit of a dry hump is welcome - sounding is definitely not one of them.
Don't force the plug or sound into the penis
If you encounter any resistance, stop. The body has ways of telling you to stop even if your mind might not agree. If something is resisting the insertion of the sounding rod or plug, don’t force it. Damaging a urethra can lead to long-term complications such as impotence, stricture and incontinence.
Remove solid plugs or sounds before ejaculation
If you’re using a hollow plug, ejaculate will flow through with no problem, but if you’re using a solid plug or sound, remove it before ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation (where semen flows backward into the bladder rather than out of the body) can lead to infertility. It won’t hurt, but a dry orgasm might ruin the moment. Remove the sound or plug slowly with care, being sure to let the erection ease a little if the sound has a defined curve. Once the sound is out, go for gold. Or creamy white, as the case may be.
These considerations are not designed to be advice in how to play safely - they are things to think about prior to engaging in dangerous forms of play.
No matter the precautions you take in this kind of activity, you cannot guarantee the safety of those involved. Approach this form of play with extreme caution.
